Welcome to Adventure Xplorer - Cape DualSport Adventure Bike Tours
Explore Cape Town, Cederberg, Overberg, Garden Route, Karoo and more.
Day rides, as well as multi-day tours with an exciting range of accommodations and destinations.
- The most popular seem to be three days riding, with two overnight stays.
One day to get to an overnight stay via interesting roads.
The second day to either ride a circuit back to the same venue (target is around 300km),
or to ride to a different overnight venue.
The third day to ride back home.
We usually depart Friday morning and return on Sunday, which requires taking a day's leave from work on the Friday.
- Two days riding with one overnight stay.
Basically a there-and-back ride.
We try to take a different route back wherever possible.
- One day ride, no overnight - usually a circuit via a lunch venue.
- Occasionally we shall do longer tours, usually to locations further away such as Baviaanskloof, etc
What you get for your money:
- Total cost will be given upon invite, detailing what is included (accommodation, meals, etc).
Group rates will be organised wherever possible.
Fuel will always be for your own account.
- A detailed route plan in various formats is provided before the ride, including:
- The names and locations of mountain and river passes, including whether it is dirt or tar (or mixed surface),
- planned fuel stops including distances between fuel-stops,
- venue for lunch stop (if included) along with web-links where available,
- details of overnight venue/s (if included) including arrangements for dinner & breakfast,
- an indication of the skill level required for the route, and whether it is pillion-friendly or not.
- Route info will be provided in the form of:
- A Google Map of the route, colour coded for each segment. Passes colour-coded according to surface type.
- A GPX file to upload to your GPS or smartphone navigation app with waypoints of the passes and landmarks. Note, this will contain TRACKS of the rides, not ROUTES, to avoid the problem that different GPS units select different roads to connect the via-points. So no matter which GPS you use or which navigation app that can import GPX files, everyone will be on the same page following the exact same path.
- A KMZ file to view on Google Earth.
- Tyre-irons, bead-breakers, basic tools, compressor, puncture kits will be carried, though if you have any of these, please bring them along too.
- Limited technical support with basic tools and assistance though each bike should carry the tools and spares it mostly requires for basic repairs (such as for example, spare tube/s for your specific tyre size, a spare chain master-link).
- A specific WhatsApp group will be created for each multi-day ride (and sometimes for a one-day ride too), to plan, organise, debate, and inform everyone of exactly what to expect, and to keep in touch during the ride where there is mobile signal. Everyone is encouraged to post your best photos from the ride to this group during, or immediately after the ride, so you should get lots of photos of yourself taken by others.
- Everyone on the ride will be asked to install the free App, Life360, available on Android and IOS, on your smartphone.
Just before the ride, you will receive an invite to join a "circle" on Life360.
This allows us to keep track of where everyone is during the ride, whenever there is mobile signal.
This is useful in case anyone runs late for the start of the ride, and in case someone gets lost on the ride (hopefully where we have signal).
- Ongoing guidance and tutorials about offroad riding, such as the one on Group Riding which you can read here:
https://adventure.xplorer.co.za/blog/2019/08/07/group-riding
Many others are planned, including tutorials on planning routes, navigating your planned routes, guides to useful apps for PC and mobile devices, etc.
Reviews of adventure bike friendly overnight venues and restaurants, reviews of websites of particular interest to adventure riders, recommendations for equipment specific for adventure bikes and adventure riding, etc.
Note: No instruction on offroad riding is included, as it is expected that you are already experienced or have done at least one training course with any of the many local institutions that offer offroad training courses (Perhaps a future article might list some of these with details).
If you have never been on one of my organised rides, just ask some of the people who have been, for a referral or review.
If you have been on any of my organised adventure tours, please send me an email or WhatsApp message with a review, referral, endorsement, complaints, suggestions or recommendations to improve (contact details below).
OK, if you read this far, then you are probably interested in joining such rides.
Let me know then I shall add you to a dedicated WhatsApp group for this (contact details below).
Let's go have some great adventures, make new friends, discover new roads and new venues, but most important of all, let's go make memories!
